Human Hero Donna Leetz

Donna Leetz moved into a home in Elgin in 2003 and found herself in neck deep in feral cats! Rather than see this as a problem she took it as an opportunity to keep the local feral cat population in check. She volunteers about 25 hours each week trapping cats to spay or neuter them and then releases them back to their lives. “I’m not a licensed shelter and I’m not a licensed rescue,” Leetz said. “I’m just somebody trying to help.”

Leetz sets humane live traps where she places food inside during a normal feeding time and then waits for the animals to walk in.

She has helped out in situations where people have more than 50 cats in a single residence and regularly works at a smaller scale.

She continues to feed about a dozen of the wild cats on her property and fosters another 12 to 15 of the felines for Cinderella’s Hope, a nonprofit organization in West Dundee that helps with cat adoptions and spaying and neutering of both friendly and feral cats.

Leetz said she doesn’t know how long she’ll keep it up — probably until she goes broke, she said dryly.

“I don’t have a goal, but as long as I can help the animals I will continue to help the animals,” Leetz said.

Thank you Donna, from silly kitties everywhere!

Cat Hero Dorothy Max Passes Away

Dorothy Max CAT HERO of Cleveland, Ohio passed away this morning. She died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 81.

Dorothy was known for feeding hundreds of stray cats all over Northeast Ohio every day. She would also catch the feral cats, domesticate them, and find them homes through her association with the PetsMart in Willoughby. She was brave enough to catch cats too feral to be adopted, have them neutered and return them to their neighborhood. She would break into abandoned buildings, trespass on private property, scale four-foot snowdrifts and defy drug dealers to feed her charges. She once said she had garnered a grudging respect from drug dealers who didn’t bother her on her daily mission to leave food out for cats in East Side Cleveland neighborhoods. She said some times they even helped carry the bags.

When her car was stolen in 1996, PetsMart and private donors bought her a new one for $10,000.

Her group, Save Our Strays, was a loose-knit organization of volunteers who would help Dorothy on her rounds. Her son said her current group of volunteers have been actively working the daily feedings and caring and would continue Max’s goodwill work.

In addition to her son, Dorothy is survived by a brother, Frank, and a sister, Arlene, both of Euclid.

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING DOROTHY! You will be missed.

Cat Loses Leg in Illegal Trap, Hero Hiker Saves the Day

In Boston a cat is recovering after having his leg crushed in an illegal trap.

A hero hiker found this kitty with his front left leg crushed in a steel trap that had been set next to popular hiking trails. The cat, who has been dubbed “Mr. Bates” by his veterinarians, spent a day in severe pain and in freezing cold weather with its bones, muscles and tendons crushed in the trap.

The hero hiker contacted local Animal Control officers, and the cat was taken to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.

To save the cat’s life vets had to amputate his leg. The MSPCA is not sure if the cat was a pet, as it was not wearing a collar and was not microchipped. They are hopeful if the cat was a pet, the owner will come forward. If he is not claimed, he will be put up for adoption.

Do you know anyone in Boston that wants to help a kitty in need??

The MSPCA is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to a conviction for animal cruelty in the case.

Miracle Kitty Left for Dead Frozen and Broken on the Road SURVIVES!

In Winona MN a kitty has surely used one of his nine lives… 6 month old Percival was hit by a car and the driver left him for dead, flattened and frozen to the street near a cemetery. Thanks to human hero Justin Stoltman, who found the kitty unresponsive and drove him to Pet Medical… little Percy is alive and getting better everyday!

Veterinarian Deb Finnegan, who owns Pet Medical Center in downtown Winona said Percy arrived in shock with extreme frostbite. His x-rays showed the accident had broken his little hips in four spots and shifted them forward two inches. Deb said she was impressed… “he’s got a strong will to live.”

Deb… our second human hero in this story decided to take a chance on Percy. She bought a $400 metal plate and screws to fix Percy’s hip with, then donated her time to perform the necessary four-hour surgery – a very expensive procedure. The next morning, Percy briefly stood… “It was a moment of victory for all of us,” Finnegan said.

Thursday, she amputated three inches of Percy’s tail that had frozen and wasn’t healing. The pads on his small paws still are raw and scabbed, but Finnegan expects Percy to recover. He will be on cage rest for much of the next four weeks.

No one so far has reported Percy missing or come forward to claim him, and if no one speaks up, Finnegan plans to make Percy a permanent member of her family.

Thank you Justin and Deb!

Two Faced Kitten Born in Florida

This very rare two-faced black cat, appropriately named Harvey Dent after the Two-Face character in the Batman series, was born healthy and adorable in Florida this week. Thanks to these two heroes for not giving him up or giving up on him!

Three Day Old Kittens Rescued From Apartment Fire

In Deerfield Beach, Florida rescue crews rushed to save several kitties after an apartment building caught fire.

The fire started on the first floor and quickly spread. Human hero Janelle Cunningham looked out her back window and ran over to help save anyone caught inside. Janelle helped several people out of the building and was also able to help a female cat and her three day old kittens!

Janelle says she does not consider herself to be a hero… she was just following her instincts but here at Silly Kitty Videos we think she is a hero for sure!

Thanks Janelle!

Kitten is Saved From Drowning!

Little Jess went missing in Braunton (Devon, UK) just before the new year but was FOUND! She had wandered more than five miles away before being rescued by kind-hearted teenage hero Courtney Sargent! Courtney was just walking home when her and a friend heard some distressing meows. She spent almost a half an hour trying to figure out where the sounds were coming from when she finally discovered little Jess in a sewer that ran parallel to the road. The little kitty was cold, wet and scared so Courtney took her home, gave her lots of love and then called Cat Protection. Luckily Jess had a microchip and was easily reunited with her family – owners Helen and Andy Norman of Velator.

The Norman’s are back to normal! Thank you Courtney!

How to Help Save Cats & Dogs…

Mark Ross has inspired many people to help save animals after he began posting pictures of cats & dogs during his time spent as a volunteer at the Manhattan Animal Care & Control Center on 110th Street. His actual task was to take pictures aimed at tempting people to adopt these little guys but he couldn’t help but pay more attention to the animals deemed too sick to live.

He took to his Facebook page, posting these pictures along with short bios detailing the animals and their last nights in this world as a last ditch effort hoping someone would be willing to save them.

These pictures and more are now featured in a glossy coffee table book called “Animal Shelter Portraits” showcasing 76 images snapped over two years. (Out March 27th)

While you may think it’s too sad to look at… remember two things – 1: the book will donate a percentage of it’s proceeds to the No Kill Advocacy Center and 2: spreading the word about all the littles stuck in shelters can help inspire others to adopt, volunteer or foster…

GO INSPIRE and BE INSPIRED!

Toulouse the $12,000 Kitty!

Toulouse was known for routinely jumping on to the next door neighbors’ balcony for visits but one fateful day he didn’t make it and fell 7 whole stories breaking all four of his little paws.

When his owners, Renelle Williams and husband learned that Toulouse would need a $12,000 operation they say they based their decision on whether or not to move forward and pay on what the six year old kitty’s quality of life would be… but we all know they said yes because WE LOVE OUR KITTIES!

Toulouse had his operation and has metal pins inserted into every toe from his ankle thru to his feet. The little guy is recovering at home and will have the pins removed in six to eight weeks.

Good decision Williams family, we are all happy that it worked out!
