Corky the Kitten Gets New Legs

After a months-long Facebook campaign that resulted in an outpouring of donations from all over the world, staff members at CATS Cradle Shelter Rescue and Adoption in Fargo, North Dakota were able to arrange a life-saving surgery for Corky the rescue kitten born with leg deformities.

Corky Before Surgery

Our hero Dr. Dan Burchill, basically invented this surgery just for Corky. It took about five hours to correct a rare congenital condition called “Bilateral Arthrogryposis of the Tarsus,” which causes the legs to develop backwards and criss-crossed.

Corky will now go thru weeks of training to use the new legs but is already at a great start… yay!

Cat Stuck in Tree for Five Days is Rescued!

A cat that was stuck up a tree in Port Moody, B.C., for five days finally has been rescued!

Local man Terry Banks noticed the kitty on Tuesday but he couldn’t get a ladder long enough to help. Thankfully he got together with other concerned neighbors who had heard the cat’s cries and although they were unable to convince the fire department to help, they all pitched in and raised $100 to hire an arborist willing to climb the tree.

The kitty suffered some small paw wounds and lost a little weight but is said to be OK!

Court Overturns Will to Spare Cat’s Life!

A first-of-its kind, unprecedented court case in Illinois has allowed this little guy to stay alive!

Georgia Lee Dvorak died suddenly last Christmas Eve at  the age of 76 and in her will written in 1988 she had included the instruction to euthanize any cats she possessed when she died.

As it turned out, just 18 months ago she had adopted a  black cat named Boots who, despite her 11 years, remains in good health.

“We read the will, we took a look at it, and we were a bit shocked, said Jeff Schmidt, the Director of Personal Trust for the bank. “We’re speculating as to why she would have that in her will. It’s kind of ironic given the ultimate disposition of her estate.”

Georgia had included donations to numerous charities, many of them involving the care of animals in her will. “She had a big heart and was a very intelligent lady,” said neighbor Sandra Buturusis. Boots was a stray cat with a troubled past.  Boots’ prior owners reportedly threw her down stairs and kept her in a locked closet for days at a time with no food, water or litter box. Buturusis speculated that Dvorak would want Boots put down rather than be adopted by another abusive owner. But, she added, she would also have wanted the animal placed in a “suitable home” rather than euthanized.

The bank and attorneys from Spain, Spain & Varnet felt uncomfortable putting down a perfectly healthy cat and this week convinced a Cook County judge to spare Boots’ life.

“Given this woman’s history over the last 20 years, it seems that if we could demonstrate to her that a good home could be found for this animal, that’s probably what she wanted. This document is very old. It’s a 1988 will, and we think we did the right thing, and the judge did the right thing, definitely,” said Schmidt.

Boots continues to get daily care and will soon be taken in by Cats-Are-Purrsons-Too, a no-kill shelter in Chicago.

Missing Cat Going Home after 15 Years!

In southern Germany a ginger cat named Poldi was found in the woods about 19 miles from the city of Munich. She has been missing since 1996. She was identified by a number tattoo on her ear.

Poldi was found sitting on a log near the forest village of Aying and taken in by a young boy named Kilian Schoettel. Once the family discovered the cat’s tattoo they took him into the animal shelter to see if he could be identified. Luckily they were able to find records of this cat being missing and track down the owner!

Poldi’s owner was shocked the kitty was still alive.

Cat Breeder Performs Emergency C-Section for Ragdoll Kittens

Shelley Hayward in Australia was playing with her pregnant Ragdoll cat Ruby when all of the sudden Ruby had a fit. Ms Hayward performed mouth to mouth and tried her best but Ruby passed.

The kittens were moving around inside of her and since Ms Hayward lived too from from the vet she took action into her own hands. Thankfully she grew up on a farm and had a cat breeder’s delivery kit stored. Working as quickly as possible she managed to get all six kittens out alive. Sadly, two died days later.

“I look at them every single day and can’t believe it … they must be such little fighters,” she said.

Well thanks Robert!

Cat Lady Leaves Her Home to Cats After Death

Australian Dot Davies died from cancer at 85 and has  bestowed her coastal home to the RSPCA and the Cat Haven.

She was affectionately known to locals as “the cat lady.”

The lot, 300m from the beach and for sale as two 506sqm blocks or one 1012sqm lot, will go under the hammer at noon today.

Ms Davies, who is remembered by neighbours as a woman who could be a bit of a recluse, never married and had no close family.

Karina Busselll, her neighbour said  Miss Davies was “very proud and she did not like to ask for help. Her house was falling to bits and the guys offered to fix it but she would say, ‘the men around here work hard enough and they don’t need to do anything for me’.”

Ms Davies was a lifetime member of the Cat Haven and a close friend of Val Mitchell, a founder of the haven in the 1960s. “We were deeply humbled when the property was left to us,” Cat Haven spokesman David Settelmaier said.

“She had no phone and when she wanted to call the Cat Haven, she would walk to the phone box and have long conversations with the staff.”

You will surely be missed Dot!

Lion Hugs His Rescuer… More Lion Hugs!

Burned Brockton Cat will Survive!

A house fire in Brockton, MA left this brave kitty badly burned. Ember had all four pads on her paws burned off and parts of her head and face were singed. But she didn’t give up!

“Her will to survive was so strong,” said Kim Heise, manager of the Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts in Brockton. “She was right up at the front of her cage, rubbing up against the cage, wanting me to pet her head… That said a lot.”

The homeowner signed over ownership of her 14 cats to the city at the fire scene. Ember was among four cats out of 14 living in the East Street home that survived the blaze. Two cats died at the scene. Another two were later euthanized. Four were treated, and six more are missing. Two of the four surviving cats, Phoenix and Ashton, have been adopted, one by a Brockton firefighter. A black-and-white cat, now called Cinders, is still looking for a home.

The shelter is accepting donations to help defray the medical costs, Heise said.
